The newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, is continuing to assemble his team and has announced the name of his candidate for the position of U.S. Ambassador to the UN. The nominee is Elise Stefanik, a key fundraiser for the Republican Party and an ally of Trump, who has a low level of support for Ukraine.
On Monday, November 11, Donald Trump himself reported Stefanik's nomination for the UN Ambassador position in a comment to CNN. The 40-year-old Congresswoman is known for her criticism of the UN and previously called for a "complete reevaluation" of funding for the organization amid calls from the Palestinian administration to exclude Israel from the UN.
“It is a great honor for me to nominate Elise Stefanik to work in my cabinet as the U.S. representative to the UN. Elise is an incredibly strong, resilient, and intelligent fighter,” Trump stated.
CNN reports that Stefanik's selection as the U.S. representative to the UN indicates a "more combative stance" for the country regarding the organization. The Republican may replace Democratic Party representative Linda Thomas-Greenfield, who has served as the U.S. representative to the UN since 2021.
It is noted that Elise Stefanik was elected to Congress from New York in 2014 when she was 30 years old, making her the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. Until 2016, Stefanik criticized Donald Trump, but later changed her position and defended him during his first impeachment attempt. Notably, during that time, twin brothers from Ukraine testified against Trump, one of whom was appointed as a senator in November 2024.
According to the "Republicans for Ukraine" project, Elise Stefanik's level of support for Ukraine remains low. In particular, she voted against a bill for additional security funding for Ukraine in 2024 and supported an amendment to the national defense bill that would have canceled $300 million in aid to Ukraine.
It is worth noting that earlier, Donald Trump announced that he did not invite former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley to his administration. Both politicians advocated for continued assistance to Ukraine in its war against Russia. Specifically, during the Republican primary, Nikki Haley, competing against Trump, repeatedly emphasized that Ukraine's victory in the war with Russia is in the interest of the United States, while Mike Pompeo advocated for Ukraine's immediate accession to NATO.
It should be noted that Donald Trump must form a new administration by his inauguration on January 20, 2025. The complete list of those who will be part of the Republican administration is currently unknown.
