The state registries of Ukraine have experienced the most extensive cyberattack in recent times. This was reported on Thursday evening, December 19, by the Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic integration and the Minister of Justice of Ukraine, Olha Stefanishyna, on Facebook.
“As a result of a targeted attack, the operations of the Unified and State Registries, which fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, have been temporarily suspended. We are currently coordinating efforts with our team and specialists from other services to counter the cyberattacks and restore the systems,” the statement reads.
The minister also noted that the goal of these actions was an attempt to disrupt the functioning of Ukraine's critically important infrastructure, specifying that “it is already clear that the attack was carried out by the Russians.”
Currently, specialists are working “in an intensified mode on the phased restoration of access” to the affected registries.
According to preliminary estimates, Stefanishyna emphasized, there is no threat to the functionality of other resources. First and foremost, she stated, the State Registry of Civil Status Acts of Citizens, the Unified State Registry of Legal Entities and Individual Entrepreneurs, and the State Registry of Rights to Real Estate will be restored.
“The priority restoration time is expected to be approximately up to two weeks,” the official reported. She assured that after full restoration, a thorough analysis of the attack will be conducted jointly with relevant authorities to strengthen protection against similar intrusions in the future.
“The enemy is trying to exploit this situation in its information operations to sow panic among citizens of Ukraine and abroad. I thank the citizens for their understanding. We will provide additional information on all important updates,” concluded Stefanishyna.
For its part, the “Diia” portal informed users that due to the forced updates of state registries, some services within the application are temporarily not operational, as reported by “Ukrinform.”
