Why do cats change their fur color throughout life? Key factors influencing this transformation.

It is well-known that a pet's diet directly affects its health, but not everyone is aware that the type of food can also influence the color of its fur.
Почему кот меняет цвет шерсти на протяжении жизни: основные факторы.

The shades of fur and colors in cats can be incredibly diverse – ranging from solid black to spotted. However, it occasionally happens that the fur changes color over a short period: it becomes darker or lighter. Ukr.Media discusses the main reasons why a cat's fur color may change.

Diet

It is well-known that a furry friend's diet directly affects their health, but not everyone realizes that food can also influence the color of their fur.

It's a good sign if:

  1. The fur changed its shade after switching food.

  2. The fur became darker or lighter.

  3. The tone of the fur became more vibrant or faded.

Cat breeders are well aware of this rule, so they strictly adhere to a proper diet.

Sunlight Exposure

If a cat spends a lot of time in the sun, it’s no surprise if the shade of its fur has changed. Under sunlight, fur can turn yellow or reddish. While we receive a valuable component – vitamin D – from sunlight, ultraviolet rays can have an aggressive effect on the pigment of a cat's fur. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can also cause the fur to become dull.

Weather Conditions

Many cats experience changes in fur color with the change of seasons, often happening in winter and summer.

The fur most frequently changes shade in the following parts of the cat's body:

  • face;
  • ears;
  • paws;
  • tail.

Age Factors

As cats age, not only their health and activity change, but also the shade of their fur. The color of a cat's fur can change not only in older age (8-12 years) but also at a younger age (4-5 years).

Stress

Stress is undesirable for cats, especially when they are pregnant. However, if a cat has experienced stress or anxiety during pregnancy, it may give birth to smoky kittens.

As they grow older, the smoky color of the cats can change to another shade. For example, a cat with a light coat may shift its fur color to a darker hue.
