“Foreign Affairs highlighted the key points of the upcoming peace agreement. President-elect Trump has made it clear that he aims to end the war in Ukraine, regardless of the aspirations of Ukraine and Russia. The essence of the peace agreement will focus on preventing the resumption of war, and this will essentially be the most important aspect,” reports Alexander Musienko.

As he explains, the first condition is guarantees of post-war security for Ukraine, so that Russia understands the unacceptability of the price it will have to pay for a new invasion. The second, the expert continues, is a ceasefire agreement, and the third is punishment for Russia, meaning sanctions must remain in place.

“Not a word about NATO, and that is very important. What other security guarantee could there be? We have discussed this repeatedly and gone through it several times. There is no alternative, only NATO today or the placement of American nuclear weapons on Ukrainian territory along with American troops; establishing foreign military bases is also an option,” emphasizes Alexander Musienko.

As the future U.S. President's special representative for Ukraine, Kit Kellogg, noted, Trump wants to achieve a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine, rather than repeating failed attempts like the Minsk agreements. According to the expert, it is very good that the discussion is no longer about Minsk, but it is unfortunate that there is still a lack of specifics.
