The Trump administration has temporarily halted the acceptance of applications for temporary entry programs into the United States, including "Uniting for Ukraine."
According to writes the NYT publication.
The directive to suspend several programs that allowed foreigners to temporarily enter the U.S. was issued by officials at the Department of Homeland Security. The ban also affected the program that allowed Ukrainian citizens to come to the U.S. due to the war.
According to the directive reviewed by the publication, the agency requires an immediate halt to "final decisions" regarding applications associated with such programs while the Trump administration considers whether to terminate them permanently.
The number of programs mentioned in the directive is quite large. In particular, entry will be blocked for migrants leaving the most unstable countries in the world. Besides Ukraine, similar programs allowed for temporary entry for citizens of Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela, and others.
According to officials, Trump believes that many of these programs were illegal from the start. Earlier this week, after his inauguration, he signed an order requiring the Department of Homeland Security to stop "all categorical programs of advance parole that contradict U.S. policy as established in my orders" or programs that allow a large number of people to enter the States under a temporary status known as advance parole.
The acting head of the Department of Homeland Security subsequently instructed a review of all advance parole programs to determine which align with Trump's policy and to suspend them if necessary during the review.
Trump's associates have been particularly critical of the programs that allowed over 500,000 migrants from Cuba, Venezuela, Haiti, and Nicaragua to enter the U.S. under advance parole if they had financial sponsors.
Among the temporarily suspended programs is Uniting for Ukraine, initiated by Joe Biden, which allowed Ukrainian citizens to come to the U.S. temporarily if they had financial sponsors. According to government data, as of September 2023, over 150,000 Ukrainians had arrived in the U.S. under this program.
The directive also halts decision-making on applications for a program that allowed some families to reunite in the U.S. and an initiative for unaccompanied minors from Central America who have relatives in the U.S.
