Germany is discussing with its partners in the "Group of Five," which also includes Poland, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom, how to enhance military support for Ukraine following the U.S. presidential elections.
Source. This was stated at a joint press conference with Ukrainian leadership in Kyiv on Tuesday, January 14, by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, as reported by Deutsche Welle.
"The creation of the 'Group of Five' was initiated by me in November of last year, immediately after the U.S. presidential elections. I invited my colleagues to Berlin ahead of Christmas," Pistorius commented to DW. "We held our first meeting there, discussing what conclusions we need to draw from the election results in Washington. And what we should do after [the end of] the war to ensure that Ukraine has strong armed forces capable of defending itself."
"In this regard, we are discussing and making initial decisions; this work is ongoing ahead of the next meeting of the 'Group of Five' [defense ministers] in Paris," Boris Pistorius continued.
Among the main areas of discussion, he highlighted the expansion of capabilities for joint defense enterprises in Ukraine, increasing the level of cooperation between European countries and Ukraine, and sharing experiences with one another.
The goal is to "determine what to do next to provide Ukraine with the assistance it needs," noted the German defense minister.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that the total amount of support provided by Germany accounts for about 16% of all assistance Ukraine has received from partners.
"We are particularly grateful for Germany's significant contributions to the defense of Ukrainian airspace and the construction of a modern Ukrainian air defense system. We appreciate the Patriot and IRIS-T air defense systems, and we are certainly thankful for the Gepards, which have protected our critical infrastructure and continue to do so," Zelensky stated.
Key topics discussed during the meeting included military support for Ukraine, strengthening air defense, supplying ammunition, and procuring Ukrainian weapons and equipment based on the Danish model.
Pistorius noted that Germany has already ordered 54 new RCH 155 self-propelled howitzers for Ukraine.
"I believe they will arrive as quickly as possible because this is indeed a very effective and mobile system that will significantly aid you in your ongoing struggle," the minister said.
