It is in January that the world-renowned composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart celebrates his birthday. A grand concert on January 24 featuring the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Lviv National Philharmonic and the Lviv National Academic Male Choir "Dudaryk" will culminate in a performance of Mozart's "Great Mass."
The soloists will be Anna Shumaryna (soprano), Liliya Nikitchuk (mezzo-soprano), Vadym Manchuk (tenor), and Volodymyr Shinkarenko (bass). Conducting will be Volodymyr Syvohip.
The press service of the philharmonic notes: “The music composed by Mozart for the Great Mass is incredibly dense, akin to the sound of an entire cathedral, where each note contributes to a spiritual uplift. The grand contrasts, virtuosic choir, and refined orchestra create an impression of solemn grandeur.”
For this work, Mozart wrote an uplifting soprano part, delicate even in the highest notes, for the voice of his young wife, Constanze Weber. At the time of this score's composition, Constanze, who was unwell, was the focus of young Mozart's attention, and he dedicated this commissioned masterpiece to her – a true monument of spiritual music.
Dmytro Katsal, director and artistic leader of the "Dudaryk" choir, a distinguished artist of Ukraine, states: “Mozart's Mass in B minor is today one of the most performed works in the world. It is a piece of human drama and divine hope. Filled with all the colors of oratorio and the instrumentation of the classical era, imitative polyphony, and the finest examples of counterpoint from Haydn and Bach, as well as virtuosic soloist parts and extraordinarily deep melodies, etc. The number of participants exceeds 150.”
“We take great pleasure in having this work in our regular repertoire and presenting its performance to the Lviv audience. We are delighted to collaborate with the Lviv National Philharmonic, which allows us to generate such magnificent and significant events in Lviv,” adds Katsal.
