Last week, a 68-year-old resident of the Zolochiv district died due to complications from influenza A. As reported by ZAXID.NET on Monday, March 3, Natalia Timko-Ivanchenko, the general director of the Lviv Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, stated that the woman had underlying health conditions (ischemic heart disease, obesity) and had not been vaccinated against the flu. The patient was attempted to be saved in one of Lviv's hospitals, but unfortunately, it was unsuccessful. This season, this marks the fifth death from flu complications in the Lviv region. Another life was claimed by the respiratory syncytial virus, which caused the death of a 67-year-old woman.
During the past week (from February 24 to March 2), in Lviv region, as reported by Natalia Timko-Ivanchenko, the incidence of illness increased by 15.5% (by 3,342 cases) compared to the previous week. A total of 24,875 cases of influenza and acute respiratory viral infections were registered. Compared to the previous week, the incidence among children under 17 years old rose by 8.6%, while among adults it increased by 22.2%. Among children, those aged 5-14 years are most frequently affected (25.2%), while among adults, the most affected age group is 30-64 years (28.9%).
Last week, there were 134 more hospitalizations compared to the week before. A total of 416 patients were undergoing inpatient treatment, including 237 children.
According to Natalia Timko-Ivanchenko, among the patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza, there were no vaccinated individuals. Therefore, she advises that at the first signs of a cold, individuals should stay at home and contact their family doctor.
