On the eve of St. Nicholas Day, Thursday, December 5, the main Christmas tree for 2024 will be lit near the Opera House in Lviv. The tree was donated to the city by the family of Yaroslav and Hanna Pidvirny from the village of Birky in the Yavoriv district.
According to reports from the Lviv City Council on November 29, on Monday, December 2, workers from the Lviv Utility Company "Green Lviv" will cut down the tree and transport it to Lviv. The lighting of the city's main Christmas tree is scheduled for 6:00 PM on December 5, accompanied by carols performed by the municipal choir "Homin".
This year, the tree was gifted to the city by the family of Yaroslav and Hanna Pidvirny from the village of Birky in the Lviv region. The height of the tree is approximately 16 meters, and it is about 20 years old.
Yaroslav and Hanna Pidvirny shared the story of how they managed to grow such a tall tree in their yard. Hanna Pidvirna accidentally found a broken seedling on the road; it was small but had roots. Her husband and grandson decided to plant the little tree in their yard. According to their daughter Natalia, in the early years, the Christmas tree was very small and grew poorly, but her father took good care of it, so the tree became tall and is now causing inconveniences for the household, prompting the family to consider cutting it down for the past four years.
The head of the culture department, Oleksiy Taraban, stated that the tree will be decorated only with illumination, and instead of a star on top, there will be an anti-tank "hedgehog" made by the workers of the Lviv Electric Transport Company two years ago. The lighting was purchased back in 2018. The official emphasized that no funds from the city budget are allocated for the city tree, and the lighting of the tree during the holidays is quite economical.
