Law enforcement officials uncovered a Russian special services agent group that was plotting a series of terrorist attacks in the Odesa region. The perpetrators were apprehended while planning an explosion near one of the regional police departments. This was reported on Monday, January 30, by the Security Service of Ukraine.
According to investigators, the terrorists intended to set fire to several service vehicles and then remotely detonate an improvised explosive device near the police officers. To carry out this plan, the criminals settled in a hostel near the police department, purchased four canisters of gasoline, and concealed explosives disguised as a fire extinguisher.
“Law enforcement officials uncovered the members of the agent group during the investigation of another crime – the murder of a volunteer from Odesa that occurred on January 20. At that time, the perpetrators set fire to a local activist's car near his home, and when he came out to extinguish the fire, they activated an explosive device hidden in a backpack nearby,” the agency reported.
In the Odesa regional prosecutor's office, it was clarified that for $2,500, the criminals agreed to detonate the improvised explosive device near the home of a 54-year-old entrepreneur-volunteer living in the Peresyp district of Odesa. The creation of the explosive device was monitored by a representative of the Russian special services online.
According to the investigation, the offenders included three drug addicts aged between 23 and 45, as well as their 46-year-old accomplice, who had previously served time for theft and robbery. The recidivist acted separately from the rest of the group and was responsible for making the explosives and placing them in hiding spots.
Currently, the detainees have been charged under part 3 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (terrorist act resulting in loss of life). They face life imprisonment with property confiscation.
