A lieutenant was tried in Zakarpattia due to the actions of his subordinate.

The soldier failed to promptly report the absence of the staff sergeant on duty.

The Uzhhorod City District Court of the Zakarpattia region found Senior Lieutenant Yaroslav S. guilty of negligent performance of military duties for failing to timely report the unauthorized absence of a subordinate from the unit (AWOL). The court imposed a fine of 17,000 UAH.

As stated in the ruling published in the court register in January 2025, in December 2024, the head of the border guard inspectorate, Senior Lieutenant Yaroslav S., was accused of negligence in military service. According to the case materials, the lieutenant was unaware of the "state of affairs" in his assigned unit, specifically, he failed to report the absence of a senior sergeant to his superiors in a timely manner. The sergeant went AWOL on October 18, 2024, and did not return to service.

Yaroslav S. did not attend the court hearing and did not submit any written motions. Judge Andriy Ivanov reviewed the case, examining all materials, including the data from the service investigation and the protocol regarding the administrative offense. The lieutenant was sentenced to a fine of 17,000 UAH without the obligation to pay court fees. The ruling can still be appealed.
