A nine-year-old boy from Bukovina suffered severe burns to both eyes and his face due to a dangerous trend on TikTok. The child was trying to create a homemade firecracker when it exploded in his hands. He is currently in Odesa at the Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy, where he is being prepared for a complex surgery. He is unable to see out of one eye.
The accident occurred on the evening of January 23 in the village of Lenkytsi in the Kelmenets community. Nine-year-old Taras Moldavan found instructions for making a homemade firecracker on TikTok. Together with a friend, he attempted to make it when the device exploded in his hands. This was reported by the child's mother, Natalia Moldavan, to the publication “Mолодий буковинець”.
“Taras was playing with a friend, and they decided to try the firecracker recipe. The ingredients were simple. They poured everything into a half-liter plastic bottle, and Taras started shaking it. He was supposed to put it down afterward, but he didn’t have time – the bottle exploded in his hands,” said the mother of the injured boy.
Initially, the boy was taken to the Children's City Hospital in Chernivtsi. There, after examination, doctors advised them to go to Odesa to a specialized medical facility – the Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy.
According to the woman, Taras suffered severe burns to his face and eyes. After receiving first aid, the family headed to Odesa. The woman states that her son is in a state of shock after the incident. Doctors can only save one eye.
“Taras has severe burns to both eyes. He can't see at all with his right eye and has partial vision in his left. Doctors say there is a chance to save the left eye, but unfortunately not the right. He is scheduled for surgery in the coming days,” Natalia Moldavan explained. It is currently unknown how long the child will remain in the hospital and how long the rehabilitation process will take.
